Meet Hannah Burton our Vendor Controller
Hannah Burton is our new Vendor Controller. We had a quick chat with her to find out more about her role at Andiamo! and get to know a little bit more about her life and interests.
How did you begin your career?
I did a degree in Spanish and Italian at the University of Leeds, and then I decided to carry on at Leeds. I did a master’s by research in Italian Literature. I decided that the research life wasn’t really for me, so now I’m working at Andiamo! as the new vendor controller.
What do you find most interesting about working in languages?
I used to just really enjoy studying languages in school. I think when I was younger, I’d never been abroad until I was 17, so I was really interested in learning about different cultures and just the way languages fit together. That was something I found really interesting, especially at uni, the whole translation side of it, how nothing was ever one concrete answer. It was really creative.
What do you like about working at Andiamo?
Working at Andiamo!, I just really like the environment. It’s a really nice, friendly place to work, and I really like the fact that everyone comes together as a team to get projects finished. I just like the atmosphere in the office, really, and everyone’s so lovely.
What surprised you most when you began working at an LSP?
I was quite surprised at how much goes into a translation behind the scenes, especially all the different programs we use. There’s so much more going on behind the scenes than people realise.
What is your biggest challenge?
I think the biggest challenge sometimes is when we’ve got a really tight deadline and being able to find translators who are ready and willing to help us with that project.
Where is your favourite place to travel to?
My favourite place would probably be Granada, the south of Spain. I studied there for a couple of months. In Granada, I just liked that the people were so friendly, the scenery was so nice, like the Alhambra, everything was just so beautiful, and the weather, obviously.
Where in the world would you love to visit?
Somewhere that I’d really love to travel to at some point would be Tokyo. I’d definitely love to go to Japan. I think it would just be somewhere very different to where I’d ever been before. I’ve only ever been to Europe, mainland Europe, and I would just love to go somewhere with a completely different culture.
Tell us something not many people know about you.
Something maybe not a lot of people know about me is that when I was 17, 18, I used to be in a band with some of my friends. I played the lead guitar, and we were not great, but it was really fun!
What is the best part of your job at Andiamo!
The best part is probably telling people good news. When new translators pass our assessments, being able to tell them that they’ve passed and give them the really good feedback, I really enjoy that.
